Support to the Privatisation Programme in Orissa

Country: IndiaThe project consisted of three main components:
- The provision of technical assistance to the Department of Public Enterprises in the implementation of phase 1 of its privatisation programme;
- The training and counselling of 3000 workers retrenched as part of the enterprise reform programme;
- The disbursement and monitoring of the first tranche of redundancy payments to workers.
Main tasks carried out under this project were:
- Advising and assisting the Department of Public Enterprises in overall strategy formulation and taking forward the public enterprise reform programme
- Providing advice on transactions
- Advising and assisting in the formulation of redundancy packages for workers
- Providing training to the Department of Public Enterprises
- Providing advice on industry-specific issues such as latest industry trends and post-privatisation regulation so as to maximise the economic and social benefits of reform
- Assisting in the formulation and implementation the social safety-net schemes
- Assessing the social impact of privatisation and associated enterprise reforms
- Assisting with the hiring of various sub-contractors for undertaking specialist tasks
