Support to Final Status negotiations
ASI is directly involved in attempts to manage resolution of the Palestine-Israel conflict, and receives support from numerous governments. ASI manages the Negotiations Support Unit (NSU), in Ramallah, West Bank, which is attached to the Negotiation Affairs Department of the PLO. We examine the substance of the various issues through field work, empirical analysis and comparison with precedents etc. This information is then refined by the staff of the NSU into position papers and legal drafts and is supplied to Palestinian negotiators.
The NSU is engaged in studies of the various issues of contention between Palestine and Israel. These include: Jerusalem; refugees; Israeli settlements in West Bank & Gaza; borders & security; economic relations; water resources; and compensation from Israel to Palestine. The project is widely recognised as having very considerably strengthened Palestinian negotiating capacity, thus helping contribute to the achievement of a just and equitable peace in the Middle East.
The World Bank's former Country Director, Nigel Roberts, wrote of our project: "The direct involvement of the NSU in providing legal and technical support to Palestinian negotiators has been invaluable. The technical quality of the NSU's work has been widely acknowledged by international experts, and their role has brought a high level of professionalism and preparedness to the overall process."
