Strengthening economic management

In the early days of Afghan reconstruction ASI carried out a long-term project to build the capacity of the Afghan Ministry of Finance and Central Bank to oversee economic reconstruction.  This involved technical assistance on a range of economic management issues including:

• supervision of the evolving financial sector;

• review of the investment code to reduce discretionary powers;

• design of a framework for privatising state-owned enterprises and disposal of non-trading entities and assets; and

• accounting reform and development of a programme to introduce International Accounting Standards.
