Natural resource management
ASI has for many years experience of working on projects involving natural resources and extractive industries in a wide range of countries including Sierra Leone, Macedonia, Nepal, India, South Africa, Botswana, Guyana, Ecuador, Romania and Afghanistan. A key focus has been on building the capacity of government institutions to formulate policies and enforce legislation and regulations that enable effective and transparent management of natural resource extraction.
For example, in Sierra Leone ASI is providing operational and technical support to the Ministry of Mineral Resources. Mining is an important economic activity in Sierra Leone, making a contribution to government revenue, export earnings and foreign exchange, as well as direct and indirect employment. Effective and transparent oversight and regulation of the sector is essential to both inward investment and the prevention of conflict.
ASI has been working to resolve the issue of water in the Middle East conflict since 1999 and have also carried out an important project to resolve water conflicts between Central Asian states using the principles and tools of international law.
