Integration into the world trading system

ASI designed and presented a high level trade policy training programme for senior officials from the Office of Government in Vietnam. The key components included:

• Introduction to international trade and investment organisations and admission procedures;
• Introduction to Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs);
• The Manila Action Plan for APEC;
• WTO and its effect on the Vietnamese economy including reduction in tariffs, elimination of quantitative restrictions, facilitation of import licensing, reform of state trading enterprises;
• WTO Agreements (TRIPS, GATS etc.) and their effect on the Vietnamese economy;
• Trade-related investment measures (TRIMS) agreement under WTO;
• Case studies of other transition economies accession negotiations to WTO;
• Lessons for Vietnam from the Asian crisis; and
• The benefits for Vietnam from international economic integration.
