Conflict resolution / Post-conflict reconstruction

Disputes between ethnic and national groups over resources, especially territory, are not new. However, attempts to resolve these disputes are increasingly sophisticated, and the provision of expert advice is invaluable if differences are to be narrowed, and stable solutions implemented. Conflicts between ethnic and national groups are usually protracted, and the differences between the groups are often diverse and complex in nature.

Compromise and mutual understanding are the result of impartial, empirical analysis of the contentious issues, and this kind of analysis invariably requires the dedication of a large team of sectoral and issue-specific experts. ASI has advised on all the main issues in this respect, ranging from the defence requirements of each side and optimal border regimes to refugee repatriation and compensation evaluation. However, there are often more subtle problems, where resolution is critical to workable, operational solutions. For instance, ASI has advised on the minutiae of bilateral trade relations between (former) disputants; urban planning that takes potential, or newly agreed borders, into account; control of airspace and the electromagnetic sphere; and co-ordination in the provision of public services to people living in border regions.
